Only part of the amount on an electricity bill goes to the supplier. Knowing how the bill is built helps you see which item you can actually save on.
Bill items
- Energy charge: the kWh you consume × the supplier's unit price. This is the only item that changes with your choice of supplier.
- Distribution charge: paid to the distribution company for use of the grid; set by the regulator and the same for all suppliers.
- Taxes, funds and levies: items such as the municipal consumption tax and the energy fund.
- VAT: calculated on the total above.
Worked example (residential, 350 kWh)
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Energy charge | 350 kWh × 3.18 TRY | 1,113.00 TRY |
| Distribution charge | 350 kWh × 0.92 TRY | 322.00 TRY |
| Taxes and funds | 6% | 86.10 TRY |
| VAT | 20% | 304.22 TRY |
| Total | 1,825.32 TRY |
This example is for information only; see your own bill for the current distribution charge and tax rates.
Points to watch
- When comparing suppliers, compare only the energy charge; the distribution charge is the same for everyone.
- Check whether the tariff is fixed or indexed. With an indexed tariff the unit price changes every month.
- Read the contract for the term and any early-exit fee.
- With a green energy option (YEK-G) the difference is usually a few kuruş per kWh.
